The Fender Rhodes Mark II is an electromechanical electric piano produced from 1979 to 1983, representing an evolution of the earlier Mark I models. While mechanically similar to the late-model Mark I, the Mark II is distinguished by its updated aesthetic and construction changes that slightly alter its tonal characteristics. It is known for a clearer, more balanced tone with bright, bell-like highs, compared to the Mark I’s warmer, “barkier” sound. The most obvious asthetic difference from the Mark I is the all-black, flat harp cover. This was a functional design choice that allowed other keyboards to be stacked on top. The heavier, two-piece suitcase version has a built-in amplifier and stereo speakers. The built-in tremolo effect—inaccurately labeled “vibrato”—pan the sound between the two speakers for a lush, shimmering effect.
